Program Overview
Surf & Solace is a twice-monthly ocean therapy program designed to foster healing through surfing, mindfulness, and environmental stewardship. Held on the first and third Saturdays of each month from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM at a local beach (e.g., in Daytona Beach Shores, Florida, or a similar coastal area), the program combines surf training, therapeutic ocean immersion, and conservation efforts. It emphasizes reciprocal healing: just as the ocean provides solace and recovery for participants dealing with grief, stress, or emotional challenges, we commit to healing the ocean through active conservation. This creates a cycle of mutual restoration, where humans and nature support each other.
The program is open to all skill levels, from beginners to advanced surfers, and integrates “Blue Mind” principles to promote mental well-being. Group support sessions are held separately on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with one-on-one sessions available as needed. Sessions are led certified ocean practitioners/therapists, surf instructors, mental health facilitators (as needed) and environmental educators. Participants must be 18+ (or accompanied by a guardian), and basic swim skills are recommended.
Program Objectives
• Physical and Skill Development: Build surfing proficiency through progressive training techniques, tailored to beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels are welcome to join and help beginners.
• Emotional Healing: Use ocean therapy and Blue Mind techniques to address grief, anxiety, and emotional wounds, fostering a “healing mode” via water’s calming effects.
• Community Support: Provide group sharing and one-on-one guidance to build resilience and connection.
• Environmental Stewardship: Educate on coastal conservation and engage in hands-on activities to highlight reciprocal healing—protecting the ocean that nurtures us.
• Holistic Wellness: Promote mindfulness, reduced stress, and a deeper bond with nature for long-term mental health benefits. Participants who wish to include their personal faith explorations for healing are most welcome.
Each 4-hour session follows a structured yet flexible format, allowing for weather adjustments and participant needs. Sessions are divided into skill-based groups (beginner, intermediate, advanced) for personalized instruction and reflection.
Twice-Monthly Session Schedule (Saturdays 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM)
• Group gathering on the beach for introductions and a guided Blue Mind meditation. Participants sit or stand near the water’s edge, focusing on the sound of waves, the feel of sand, and the horizon to induce a mild meditative state. Blue Mind theory, from marine biologist Wallace J. Nichols, explains how proximity to water triggers a “blue mind” response—shifting the brain from “red mind” (stressed, overactive) to a calmer, more creative mode. This reduces cortisol, enhances dopamine and serotonin, and helps process grief by creating space for reflection without overwhelm.
• Discussion: How the ocean facilitates healing from grief—its vastness mirrors emotional depth, providing a non-judgmental space to release pain, while rhythmic waves promote rhythmic breathing and emotional regulation.
8:00 AM - 8:30 AM: Welcome and Mindfulness Warm-Up (All Levels)
• Beginner Level: Focus on foundational techniques. Start on land with pop-up drills (practicing standing from a prone position on the board), paddle technique (using arms efficiently to catch waves), and balance exercises (e.g., yoga-inspired poses on soft sand). In water, emphasize safety: reading waves, duck diving under foam, and catching whitewater waves. Surfing time: 45-60 minutes of supervised paddling and short rides to build confidence.
• Intermediate Level: Surfing time: 45-60 minutes, focusing on waves (unbroken swells) with feedback on how surfing and wave selection along with the waves caught applies to land-based daily life.
• Advanced Level: Refine high-performance maneuvers. Techniques involve speed generation, rail-to-rail transitions, and adaptive strategies for varying conditions. Surfing time: 60-75 minutes of free surfing with optional video analysis for self-improvement is a possibility depending on videographer availability.
• All levels incorporate therapeutic elements: Instructors encourage mindful surfing, where participants tune into the ocean’s rhythm to enter a flow state, aiding grief processing by distracting from rumination and building empowerment through mastery.
8:30 AM - 10:00 AM: Surf Training and Surfing Time (Skill-Based Groups)
• Post-surf debrief in small circles (5-8 people per group) to share experiences. Facilitators guide discussions on how the ocean’s “healing mode” works: The sensory immersion (salt air, water buoyancy) activates the parasympathetic nervous system, easing grief by promoting acceptance and renewal. Activities include journaling prompts like “What wave of emotion did the ocean help you ride today?” or partner shares on personal growth.
• Blue Mind extension: Breathing exercises synced to wave patterns, visualizing grief as ebbing tides that recede over time.
10:00 AM - 11:00 AM: Ocean Therapy and Group Support Integration
• Hands-on activities to give back to the ocean, reinforcing reciprocity. Examples:
• Beach cleanups: Collect plastics and debris, discussing microplastics’ impact on marine life.
• Educational talks: On coastal erosion, sea level rise, and sustainable practices (e.g., reducing single-use plastics, supporting marine protected areas).
• Planting dune vegetation or monitoring tide pools to restore habitats.
• Theme: “The ocean heals us—let’s heal it.” Participants learn how human actions (pollution, overfishing) harm the ocean, and how conservation restores balance, mirroring personal healing journeys from grief.
11:00 AM - 12:00 PM: Coastal Conservation and Reciprocal Healing
Held indoors at a community center or virtually (via Zoom for accessibility), these evening sessions provide ongoing emotional support outside the main program. No surfing involved—focus on talk therapy and connection.
• Format: Facilitated group discussions (up to 12 participants) starting with a Blue Mind-inspired visualization (e.g., imagining ocean sounds). Topics rotate: grief processing, building resilience, sharing surf therapy insights.
• Activities: Peer sharing, guided exercises (e.g., gratitude circles focused on nature’s role in healing), and resources like recommended readings (Blue Mind book excerpts).
• One-on-One Availability: Private sessions with a certified counselor can be scheduled as needed (e.g., via email or post-group sign-up), typically 45-60 minutes, for personalized grief support or surf therapy debriefs.
Weekly Group Support (Tuesdays, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM)
Additional Program Details
• Safety and Inclusivity: All sessions include lifeguard supervision, adaptive equipment for varying abilities, and trauma-informed facilitation. Weather cancellations shift to indoor alternatives like conservation workshops.
• What to Bring: Sunscreen, water bottle, towel, rash guard/swimsuit. Boards provided if beginners do not have them.
• Benefits and Outcomes: Participants often report reduced anxiety, stronger community bonds, and a renewed sense of purpose through reciprocal healing. Research supports surf therapy’s efficacy for mental health, with Blue Mind enhancing emotional regulation.
